Schedule Change Guidelines & Course Selection
-
Selecting courses is one of the most important tasks students and parents can do. Proper course selection allows students to meet graduation requirements, explore possible career interests, prepare for post-secondary education opportunities, and engage in activities he/she enjoys doing. Course selection is vital to the school as well, as our schedule for the next school year is built on the choices our students make now. Teaching assignments and teacher selection are based on the needs of our schedule.
To make all of these different pieces work together, students must make the right choices at course selection time. The school’s role in course selection will be to confirm with the student his/her choices and verify that the courses selected are indeed wanted or needed by the student. Once this is complete in the spring, schedule changes will be limited.
Schedule Change Requests for the 24-25 school year:
***PLEASE read the schedule change guidelines PRIOR to getting in touch with counseling***
During check-in dates, and at the end of July, students will receive their schedules. If your schedule includes one of the below changes, please complete the "Schedule Change Request" form (link below)
*Student schedules are liable to change up until the start of school
Schedule Changes during Check-In Will Include:
- If you have an "EMPTY" spot in your schedule.
- If you are missing a core class (English, Math, Science, Social Studies).
- If you believe you are missing 1 semester of a year-long course.
- If you believe you are missing specific graduation requirements.
- If you have a course you failed and need to repeat
Schedule Changes that are NOT within schedule change policy:
- Changing any class for an off-hour
- Moving classes to specific blocks (including off hours)
- Dropping year-long classes
- Dropping AP courses without AP teacher approval
- Changing teachers (while we do not take teacher requests or changes. If you have a significant concern, please get in touch with Mr.McClendon)
As you choose your schedule, please also keep the following in mind regarding off hours:
- Students who elect to have an “off-hour” may not also enroll in a study hall.
- Juniors are only allowed one “off-hour”, seniors may have two “off hours” in the fall and three in the spring.
- The selection of when an “off-hour” fits into a student’s schedule will not drive the schedule we create.
- For students who wish to pursue higher education after high school, we discourage higher numbers of “off hours”.
If you have another schedule change question that is NOT one of the above-mentioned, you will be required to complete the schedule change. Your counselor will be in touch via your school email to respond.
Simply changing one’s mind after the schedule is built, or believing a course is “too hard” are not valid reasons to change classes. Therefore, we expect students and parents to choose their next year’s schedule wisely.
Do NOT email your counselor or schedule an appointment UNLESS you have already completed and submitted your schedule change form VIA email.
