Welcome to Sociology
Students will examine human social behavior and analyze the different philosophies of society, the role they play in society, and the function of society as a whole. Through research projects, class activities and discussions, group work, and independent work, students will understand how society functions and how each student contributes to society. Students will be challenged to think critically about the social issues discussed, grow as a whole person, and develop personal opinions based on individual research and analyzing various resources and data sets.
We are studying society, cultures, crime and delinquency, and other sociological topics. Given the study area and current events, we will discuss various topics, some perhaps controversial. Controversial issues are an integral element of studying society, cultures, and people (sociology). We will not avoid the issues, but we will rely on primary and secondary sources, student-led discussions, and research to allow students to develop critical thinking skills and research skills and come to an informed conclusion. The students are graded on their ability to arrive at an independent conclusion and support their findings with evidence and the empirical scientific approach to the social sciences. Students are not graded on their findings, perspectives, or beliefs, only on their academic achievements (critical thinking, data analysis, and identifying and including credible primary and secondary sources as evidence).
I look forward to partnering with parents and students to achieve fantastic growth and develop the critical thinking skills necessary for the 21st century. I always welcome feedback, comments, and questions from parents. The best way to contact me is by email: edunham@esdk12.org
