    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    The Elizabeth High School Nurse Aide Training Program (EHS NATP) gives students the opportunity to find out what healthcare is all about with the possibility to become a Colorado State Certified Nurse Aide. Students will learn how to care for individuals who rely on professionals for their activities of daily living (ADLs).  

     

    COURSE OBJECTIVE:

    State certification testing consists of two sections, skills test and a multiple choice general knowledge test. In the EHS NATP, students practice and become proficient in 22 skills that are required for state certification. Students will gain knowledge of the Scope of Practice for Nurse Aides in Colorado. Students will become familiar with the laws in regards to caring for clients. They will gain knowledge of the 11 body systems, learning the normal and abnormal for each body system and how to observe for signs and symptoms that alert to a change in a client’s health. They must know what to report to a nurse, and also learn how to communicate effectively with clients, staff and family. Students will have the opportunity to experience first-hand, caring for the needs of the clients in a long-term care setting. Students will attend 2 clinical shifts at a long-term care facility contracted with the NATP. Students are required to be up to date on all childhood vaccinations, complete Tuberculosis (TB) testing, become certified with the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Providers (NOT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS), background checks and drug testing. The vaccinations, TB testing, and AHA BLS will be an expense for the student outside of the NATP. The background checks and drug testing will be financed by the NATP. Students will have the option to drug test with their private physician at the student’s expense.

    PREREQUISITES:  • Up to date on childhood vaccinations. • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Providers • Tuberculosis Testing • Drug Testing • Background Checks. • Students must provide their own transportation to clinical sites.
