COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The study of interpersonal communication is the study of interactions between people. This course examines the communication involved in interpersonal relationships occurring in family, social, and career situations.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This course is designed to study interpersonal communication from a descriptive as well as analytical perspective. Interpersonal communication topics include self-concept, perception, gender and cultural impact, verbal and nonverbal language, listening, defensiveness, and conflict. Possible methods of interpersonal communication situations will be practiced through discussion, role play, writing, observance, and speeches to audiences of varying sizes from one-on-one to large groups. In addition, this course will also emphasize the practical skill of public speaking, including techniques to lessen speaker anxiety, and the use of visual aids to enhance speaker presentations. Its goal is to prepare students for success in typical public speaking situations and to provide them with the basic principles of organization and research needed for effective speeches and communication. Must take either junior or senior year.
